Union Flags Rail Cuts Risk

Concerns are escalating regarding the impending announcement of German rail reform, with the Transport and Railway Union (EVG) warning against potential drastic cost-cutting measures at Deutsche Bahn. EVG Chairman Martin Burkert, also serving as Deputy Chairman on Deutsche Bahn’s Supervisory Board, cautioned that in Germany, the term “reform” frequently carries the mistaken interpretation of austerity.

Addressing the expectations for Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder’s (CDU) reform package, Burkert emphasized a fundamental need for enhanced service, improved quality and heightened safety for rail passengers. He expressed a hope that the minister will prioritize passenger satisfaction and actively contribute to the ongoing restructuring of the rail network.

Acknowledging the considerable efforts already underway to modernize Deutsche Bahn, Burkert cautioned that significant challenges will persist for at least another decade. He argued that, therefore, the customer experience must now be paramount. Implementing further cost reductions at this juncture, he warned, would result in a deterioration of service, leading to overcrowded, unclean trains and less secure stations.

In a recent resolution, the EVG’s federal executive board has formally requested several improvements, including increased personnel for passenger interaction both on trains and at stations. The union advocates for enhanced cleanliness, improved station services, a greater number of travel centers and ticketing machines and a more agreeable overall environment within station facilities. Furthermore, the resolution stresses the importance of job security and prospects for Deutsche Bahn employees. Finally, the union proposes integrating rail security operations under the umbrella of DB Infrago to ensure reliable protection for passengers, stations and rail infrastructure.
