AfD Matches CDU in New Poll

Recent polling data indicates a significant shift in the German political landscape. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached parity with the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) alliance in the ZDF Politbarometer, both parties currently garnering 26% of support. This represents a one-point gain for the AfD and a corresponding one-point loss for the CDU/CSU.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains stable at 15%, while the Left Party (Die Linke) sees a slight increase, rising one point to 11%. The Green Party experiences a decline, losing one percentage point to reach 10%. The Basis Movement for Freedom and Solidarity (BSW), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and “Others” remain unchanged at 3% and 6% respectively.

These figures suggest a challenging outlook for the current “black-red” coalition government (CDU/CSU and SPD) should elections be held presently.

Beyond voting intentions, the survey highlights a growing concern among the electorate regarding political violence. A substantial 75% of respondents anticipate an increase in such incidents in the future. Notably, supporters of the BSW stand out in this assessment, with only 47% expressing the expectation of rising political violence-the lowest percentage among any surveyed political affiliation.
