The co-chair of the Basis Social Movement (BSW), Amira Mohamed Ali, has ruled out the possibility of a coalition with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt following the 2026 state elections. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post”, Mohamed Ali stated that a coalition with the AfD, characterized by positions advocating for increased military spending and social welfare cuts, aligns more closely with established political forces than with BSW’s own platform.
This declaration follows speculation prompted by a recent interview granted by Anastasia Wirsing, chair of BSW’s youth organization, to the right-leaning magazine “Compact”. Mohamed Ali addressed the interview, explaining that Wirsing was approached spontaneously by a “Compact” editor during a peace demonstration and agreed to participate. She indicated that she found the content of the interview acceptable.
Mohamed Ali emphasized that BSW’s focus remains on providing representation for citizens in Eastern Germany who feel underserved by existing political options. “Our aim is to give people in the East a clear voice again, to be parliamentary representation for all those who no longer feel adequately represented – but not to plan any government coalitions a year before the state election” she added. The party aims to carve out a distinct political identity and establish a strong parliamentary presence, rather than prematurely negotiating potential coalition agreements.
