Comdirect to Offer Crypto Trading

Commerzbank’s online subsidiary, Comdirect, is poised to offer private customers the opportunity to trade cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, according to recent statements. Thomas Schaufler, Head of Private Customers, indicated in an interview with Handelsblatt that the bank is actively developing this service and anticipates a viable offering for retail clients by 2026 at the latest.

The move is intended to enhance Comdirect’s competitiveness, particularly against digital brokerage platforms like Trade Republic. To further appeal to a younger demographic, Comdirect has also launched a simplified online account and brokerage service specifically targeted at individuals under 30. This program, undergoing live testing since the summer, features reduced fees, a streamlined interface and a more limited range of services tailored for those seeking a basic digital investment option.

Looking ahead, Commerzbank plans to introduce a loyalty program for its private client base. The program would reward customers with incentives such as higher interest rates on savings accounts and complimentary trading opportunities, contingent on utilizing multiple bank products. The aim is to encourage existing customers to consolidate their financial activities within the Commerzbank ecosystem.
