Middle East Scholars Report Self-Censorship

A recent study has revealed a marked increase in self-censorship among researchers with expertise in the Middle East at German universities since October 2023. The Centre for Interdisciplinary Peace and Conflict Research at the Freie Universität Berlin released findings on Monday, indicating that 85% of surveyed academics perceive a growing threat to academic freedom.

The study, based on responses from approximately 2,000 researchers, highlights a disproportionate impact on early-career academics and those on temporary contracts. A significant 76% reported holding back on discussing topics related to Israel, citing concerns over potential misinterpretations, public backlash and adverse professional consequences. Over half of those surveyed expressed feeling pressured to avoid the Israel/Palestine issue within their institutional setting.

The research indicates that only 47% of respondents have not experienced perceived threats or limitations to their work. Others reported encountering online hate speech, accusations of antisemitism and experiences of institutional exclusion. The study’s authors emphasize the need for targeted protective measures and a robust debate culture that acknowledges diverse perspectives and sensitivities surrounding these complex issues.
