Selen May Lead German Intelligence Agency

Reports circulating in German media suggest a potential leadership change at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz), but the Federal Ministry of the Interior has yet to officially confirm the information. A spokesperson, responding to inquiries from the dts news agency in Berlin on Monday, acknowledged the media coverage, stating that it had been “taken note of” but offered no announcements regarding the matter.

According to preliminary reports from outlets such as “Table Media” and “Handelsblatt” a formal decision by the cabinet regarding the leadership transition could be reached as early as Wednesday.

Initial reactions from political circles have emerged, with Konstantin von Notz, the deputy chairman of the Bundestag’s committee overseeing intelligence activities, expressing support for the proposed appointment. Von Notz, speaking to “Handelsblatt” highlighted the candidate’s extensive experience and expertise, noting he anticipates their assumption of the role will be beneficial during a period of significant security challenges.

He further emphasized the need for improved defenses against Russian threats and called for the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Chancellery to promptly present a comprehensive reform of intelligence services legislation. This reform, he indicated, should focus on both strengthening the services and reinforcing oversight mechanisms, particularly in light of the recently established €500 billion special assets fund. Von Notz stressed the urgency of a genuine government initiative to counter hybrid threats, advocating for the bolstering of counter-espionage capabilities and drone protection measures.
