Taliban Talks Strained

The proposal by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to engage in direct talks with Afghan representatives to facilitate deportations has drawn criticism from within the German government. SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf has publicly questioned the initiative, highlighting a perceived contradiction within the coalition’s existing policy framework.

Klüssendorf, speaking to RTL and ntv, acknowledged the government’s commitment to deporting individuals with criminal records and those subject to deportation. However, he emphasized the prevailing consensus against direct engagement with the Taliban, expressing concern that such contact could be interpreted as legitimizing the regime on the international stage.

He pointed out that the current approach relies on utilizing intermediaries and involving other states to facilitate deportations. While acknowledging this as a previous solution, Klüssendorf suggested a re-evaluation of the strategy, emphasizing a reluctance to establish direct communication channels with the Taliban. He argued that the current method needs further consideration given the complexities involved.
