Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed a re-evaluation of Western strategies regarding Russian aerial and missile activity, following recent incidents involving drones within Polish airspace. In an interview with the German newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, Sikorski suggested exploring the possibility of intercepting Russian drones and missiles within Ukrainian airspace as a potential measure.
He acknowledged that such action would necessitate a collective decision involving NATO and EU allies, stating that while technically feasible, it is not a unilateral decision for Poland to make.
Beyond the airspace discussion, Sikorski also called for a coordinated response to address the “shadow fleet” of Russian vessels operating in the Baltic Sea. He proposed the establishment of a maritime control zone in the North Sea, potentially by Germany or NATO, aimed at regulating the entry of these ships into the Baltic. Sikorski emphasized the potential for environmental catastrophe should one of these vessels, similar to two that have already sunk in the Sea of Azov, be lost in the Baltic Sea. He stressed the scale of such an environmental disaster would be unprecedented.
