A leading European Parliament member has called for a critical reassessment of transatlantic and global partnerships within the West, arguing that a failure to align on shared democratic values risks creating a world order dominated by power.
Sergey Lagodinsky, a Green Party MEP, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the West, defined by its commitment to shared democratic values, risks being destabilized if it fails to operate in a unified manner. He warned that the current trajectory could lead to a world exemplified by unchecked power dynamics, a scenario touted by both Russia and China.
Lagodinsky stressed the necessity of upholding Western values while simultaneously developing the capacity to strategically leverage power to protect and promote those values. He proposed exploring unconventional alliances to solidify this position.
He specifically suggested considering Canada’s potential accession to the European Union, a concept he acknowledges might appear unusual. Beyond geographical boundaries, Lagodinsky advocated for expanding the definition of “the West” to encompass partners like Australia, South Korea and Japan, emphasizing that shared values, rather than location, should be the defining characteristic of a new Western alliance. The MEP believes exploring such partnerships is crucial to navigating increasingly complex geopolitical realities.
