Proposed changes to the draft law governing the new military service are aiming to ensure potential volunteers maintain interest in alternative social service options, including roles with the Technical Relief Organisation (THW) and civil protection.
According to Anja Weisgerber, Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader of the CDU/CSU, the planned enhancements to the voluntary military service may create competition with existing federal volunteer services. She emphasized that individuals participating in these alternative services also “deserve recognition for their commitment to preserving social cohesion and the security of our communities.
To address this, the proposal suggests including information about these alternative services within the initial inquiry process and conscription letters from the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces). Weisgerber stated this approach would highlight the dual necessity of “defending our society externally and holding it together internally.
Sources indicate that Minister for Civic Engagement and Volunteer Services Karin Prien (CDU) has already discussed the matter with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD). Pistorius is reportedly receptive to the idea of the Bundeswehr providing information about alternative service opportunities. Government circles suggest that adapting the application process to incorporate this guidance is currently under discussion between the two ministries.
