CSU Slams von der Leyens Israel Move

The Christian Social Union (CSU), a major German political party, has voiced strong criticism regarding a recent decision by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to suspend EU payments to Israel.

Klaus Holetschek, the CSU’s parliamentary group leader in the Bavarian state parliament, told the Tagesspiegel newspaper that the move was a “misstep” asserting that a secure and stable Israel is in Germany’s “own interest”. He described the European Commission’s change in direction as a “serious mistake” and a “wrong path.

While acknowledging the possibility of criticizing the Netanyahu government, Holetschek emphasized that Germany’s primary message should be unwavering support for Israel. He stated that Israel’s security is a matter of “state reason” for Germany.

Holetschek underscored the gravity of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 and the ongoing captivity of young Israelis by Hamas. He insisted that the demand for the release of hostages is a priority.

He rejected suggestions that the center-right Union parties are shifting their stance toward Israel, affirming the entire Union’s commitment. Holetschek specifically emphasized that the CSU considers friendship with Israel and the protection of Jewish life in Germany a “heartfelt concern” that will not change.
