Following recent incursions of Russian drones into Polish airspace, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a leading figure in the Free Democratic Party’s (FDP) European policy, has expressed surprise at the response from Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
Speaking on RTL and ntv on Thursday, Strack-Zimmermann stated her surprise that Chancellor Scholz had characterized the event as a new development. She argued that the situation has been deteriorating for the past three and a half years, pointing to ongoing attempts to provoke the West through substantial cyber and hybrid attacks.
Strack-Zimmermann suggested the incident was a deliberate provocation. “Twenty drones intentionally overflying or landing in Polish territory within a 100-kilometer radius cannot be coincidental. It is another provocation” she stated. She lauded the NATO alliance’s swift reaction, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating the defense of every inch of NATO territory.
