Following the recent drone incident in Poland, additional details have emerged regarding the events. Sources within NATO suggest that several of the projectiles, believed to be Russian in origin, that entered Polish airspace overnight on Wednesday were potentially targeted toward Rzeszow, a significant logistics hub.
The airport in southeastern Poland has served as a critical point for the dispatch of Western military aid to Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion. NATO military officials have stated that the trajectory of five of the drones led to a heightened expectation of a potential strike against the Rzeszow facility.
Netherlands’ F-35 fighter jets, deployed under NATO command to provide air defense support in Poland, reportedly shot down at least three of the drones. Initial investigations indicate that one further drone crashed.
German Bundeswehr (armed forces), providing air defense for the hub with two Patriot missile battery systems, detected the intrusion into Polish airspace via radar and promptly shared data within the NATO air defense network. However, the German systems were not engaged in the operation.
