German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) engaged in a telephone conversation with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, on Tuesday, addressing the Israeli strike targeting Hamas leadership members in Doha.
According to a statement released by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, Chancellor Merz expressed concern regarding the violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity resulting from the Israeli attack. He emphasized the necessity of preventing the conflict from escalating to encompass the wider region, noting the German government’s close communication with Israeli authorities on the matter.
The conversation also included acknowledgement of Qatar’s efforts to mediate a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the release of Hamas hostages, Kornelius stated.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel’s domestic intelligence agency (ISA) jointly executed the operation in Doha, targeting senior Hamas figures. The IDF accused these individuals of orchestrating the terror group’s operations over several years and holding direct responsibility for the October 7th attacks. Qatar has officially condemned the Israeli action.
