Calls for increased pressure on Israel are growing within Germany, with leading figures advocating for stricter EU sanctions. Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD parliamentary group’s spokesperson for foreign affairs, voiced his support for proposals put forth by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. These proposals, announced earlier this week, include targeted sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers and violent settlers, as well as a partial suspension of the association agreement concerning trade. Furthermore, von der Leyen indicated a suspension of bilateral support for Israel and a halt to relevant payments from the Commission.
Ahmetovic emphasized the need for Germany and Europe to take their role as mediators and advocates for de-escalation and peace seriously. He urged the German government to carefully consider von der Leyen’s recommendations, aiming for a unified European stance grounded in diplomacy, human rights and the two-state solution.
Expressing concern regarding the escalating situation in Gaza, the West Bank and the wider region, Ahmetovic called for a swift end to hostilities in Gaza to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and secure the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas. He also condemned the recent Israeli attack in Doha, stressing the universal application of international law and the inviolability of sovereign states’ territorial integrity.
