Klöckner Urges Critical Corona Review

The newly established parliamentary inquiry commission tasked with investigating Germany’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was strongly urged to conduct a thorough, transparent and self-critical examination of the events.

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) emphasized the “urgency” and importance of the commission’s work in remarks made in Berlin on Monday, calling it a “long overdue” step. The primary goal, she stated, is to secure and preserve vital knowledge gleaned from the pandemic experience – a need driven by the possibility of future global health crises.

Klöckner highlighted the opportunity for the investigation to foster societal reconciliation, noting that the pandemic has strained familial relationships. Furthermore, she believes the process can help rebuild trust in Germany’s democratic institutions. The inquiry aims to document lessons learned and ensure they are accessible for future preparedness efforts.
