France Crisis Sparks German Warning

Saarland’s Minister-President Anke Rehlinger has cautioned against the repercussions of a political crisis in France, speaking ahead of a crucial confidence vote in the French Parliament. In an interview on the POLITICO Berlin Playbook podcast, Rehlinger emphasized the necessity of a united Germany advocating for European integration and a strong Franco-German partnership. She voiced hope that a stable French government would remain in place following the vote.

Rehlinger also affirmed President Emmanuel Macron’s continued significance, describing him as a “strong personality in Europe” and crucial to the Franco-German relationship, noting his role will continue until 2027.

The discussion then shifted to the EU’s planned combustion engine ban by 2035. Rehlinger urged a focus on the “industrial reality” and the feasibility of aligning climate objectives with practical industrial transitions. While not dismissing the ban outright, she stressed the importance of facilitating a pathway for industry and protecting jobs, aiming to ensure the automotive sector’s future viability. She noted that a problematic implementation could negatively impact the sector, advocating for a review of the methods and interim steps rather than the goals themselves.
