Hubert Hüppe has been elected as the new Federal Chairman of the “Senioren-Union” a prominent organization representing the interests of senior citizens within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The election took place at the group’s 20th Federal Delegates’ Assembly in Magdeburg, where Hüppe secured approximately 72 percent of the vote, defeating interim chairman Helge Benda.
Hüppe, 68, brings a substantial background in social policy to the role. He served as a member of the German Bundestag from 1991 to 2009, again from 2012 to 2017 and most recently from 2021 to 2025. Throughout his parliamentary career, his work has focused on health and bioethics, as well as promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities. He also served as the Federal Government Commissioner for Matters concerning People with Disabilities from 2009 to 2013.
In his acceptance speech, Hüppe emphasized his intention to strengthen the Senioren-Union’s position as a significant voice within the CDU. The organization is already considered a relatively influential internal group within the party, dedicated to advocating for the concerns and needs of the older generation. The position of Chairman automatically secures a seat on the CDU’s federal executive board.
