Coalition Unity Needed SPD Warns CDU

Following the parliamentary summer recess, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is urging its coalition partner, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), to demonstrate greater adherence to coalition discipline.

Annika Klose, the SPD parliamentary group’s spokesperson for social policy, stated in interviews with RTL and ntv that the current dynamic within the governing coalition is unsustainable. She specifically directed her comments towards the leadership of the CDU/CSU, suggesting a reduction in contentious rhetoric. “Mr. Merz has repeatedly polarized issues over the summer and a less reactive approach would certainly be beneficial” she stated.

Klose cited the failed election of new Federal Constitutional Court judges as a negative example, asserting that the CDU/CSU significantly hindered the process. In contrast, she highlighted the SPD’s willingness to compromise, despite substantial reservations, by supporting the extension of the suspension of family reunification for refugees. This, she argued, raises questions regarding the reliability and commitment of the CDU and CSU as coalition partners. “I hope they will now demonstrate a greater level of cohesion” she concluded.
