Wadephul Pushes For Faster EU Expansion

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is prioritizing the acceleration of the European Union’s enlargement process. Speaking ahead of a visit to Zagreb on Monday, the Minister emphasized that a strong, united and open Europe represents not only a promise of prosperity and security, but also a crucial defense against authoritarian influence and a guarantor of continental stability.

Wadephul highlighted Croatia’s pivotal role as a model and bridge-builder for accession candidates, particularly within the Western Balkans. He acknowledged Croatia’s comprehensive understanding of both the opportunities and challenges inherent in the enlargement process, expressing a desire for the nation to take an active role in supporting the accession journeys of Western Balkan states.

The Minister affirmed that Croatia is more than simply a close and reliable partner for Germany, positioning it as a benchmark for European integration. He underscored that Croatia’s successful EU accession demonstrates the transformative power of reform, perseverance and courage in shaping a nation and expanding opportunities for its citizens.

Wadephul stressed that in a period of global upheaval, Europe’s strength lies in its cohesion and clear vision for the future. He asserted the need to offer concrete pathways to EU membership for candidate nations in the region, grounded in the principles of the rule of law, fundamental rights and robust reform efforts.

The Minister warned that a lack of clear European perspectives creates vulnerability, allowing autocratic forces to exploit disinformation, corruption and coercion to undermine the European project, sow discord and create dependencies. He concluded by reiterating that Croatia’s journey to EU membership serves as a powerful example of the benefits that accession can bring to both individuals and the wider European community.
