Rehlinger Backs Higher Taxes For Wealthiest Saarländer

A leading figure within Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) has signaled openness to increased taxation for high earners and those with substantial wealth. Anke Rehlinger, the deputy party chair and Minister President of Saarland, stated that a broader discussion on tax policy is warranted, emphasizing a need to balance relief for middle and lower incomes with contributions from those at the very top.

Speaking to the media, Rehlinger affirmed the coalition agreement’s commitment to easing the financial burden on small and medium-income earners, coupled with corporate tax reforms intended to stimulate economic growth. However, she suggested a wider perspective is necessary, indicating a willingness to consider options beyond current policies.

Rehlinger explicitly stated she aims to avoid fostering resentment, reiterating a belief that success and performance should be rewarded. Nevertheless, she argued that those who benefit most from the economic system also have a greater capacity to contribute more through taxation. This consideration extends not only to income tax but also to wealth and inheritance taxes.

Specifically, Rehlinger highlighted the comparatively low taxation of wealth in Germany when benchmarked against other European and global economies. She suggested a review of inheritance tax regulations, pointing to existing loopholes and flexibility within the system that can result in minimal tax liabilities. She clarified that any proposed changes would not target modest inheritances or jeopardize struggling businesses, but rather address significant wealth transfers where a more thorough discussion of tax fairness is warranted. The SPD official framed the potential adjustments as a matter of achieving greater justice within the tax system, not simply enacting punitive measures.
