Germany has seen a decrease in reported road traffic accidents during the first six months of 2025, according to data released Friday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Approximately 1.21 million road accidents were recorded between January and June, representing a decrease of 23,300, or 2 percent, compared to the same period in 2024.

The majority of these accidents – around one million – resulted in property damage only, also down 2 percent year-on-year. However, accidents involving fatalities or injuries rose by 1 percent, reaching approximately 139,800 incidents.

Overall, 175,000 people were injured in road accidents during the first half of 2025, a figure consistent with the number recorded in the first six months of 2024. Tragically, the number of fatalities increased by 25, bringing the total to 1,322.

When adjusted for population size, Germany experienced an average of 16 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants during the first half of 2025. This rate remained unchanged compared to both the first half of 2024 and 2023.

Preliminary figures indicate a 10 percent decrease in police-recorded accidents for June 2025, totaling 195,000 incidents. Property damage-only accidents decreased by 12 percent to 165,000, while accidents resulting in personal injury rose by 3 percent to 29,900. Around 37,000 road users were injured – a 2 percent increase – and the number of fatalities increased by 26 to 301, reaching a level last seen in June 2023, according to the federal office.
