A serious security incident occurred at a Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) munitions depot in Walsrode, Lower Saxony, according to reports.
On Monday afternoon, a civilian employee of the military allegedly removed a hand grenade from one of the storage facilities and detonated it inside a nearby barrack. Military counterintelligence officials are investigating the possibility that the employee attempted suicide. However, initial findings suggest the grenade was an obsolete model no longer in active use and therefore did not fully detonate.
Despite the limited explosion, the employee sustained severe injuries and required emergency surgery at the Hannover Medical School hospital.
The Bundeswehr confirmed that “a detonation occurred” at the Walsrode facility, but has declined to comment further on the details of the incident or the employee’s motivations, citing an ongoing investigation led by the Bundeswehr’s Operational Command.
