German Hospitality Revenue Dips in First Half of 2025

Germany’s hospitality sector experienced a downturn in revenue during the first half of 2025, according to data released Wednesday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Real terms – adjusted for price changes – showed a 3.7 percent decrease in total revenue compared to the same period in 2024. Nominal revenue saw a slight decline of 0.1 percent.

The lodging industry – encompassing hotels and other accommodations – registered a real revenue decrease of 2.6 percent and a nominal decrease of 0.2 percent in the first six months of the year. Restaurants and catering services experienced a more significant downturn, with real revenues falling by 4.1 percent, though nominal revenues remained relatively stable with a 0.1 percent increase.

Looking specifically at June 2025, the hospitality sector as a whole saw a real revenue decline of 2.5 percent and a nominal decrease of 3.9 percent compared to May 2025. Compared to June 2024, the sector’s real and nominal revenues decreased by 5.9 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively.

Hotels and accommodations experienced a 1.6 percent real and 5.5 percent nominal revenue decrease in June compared to May. Revenue fell by 5.1 percent in real terms and 4.9 percent nominally when compared to June 2024.

Restaurants and catering services also saw a decline in June, with real and nominal revenues decreasing by 2.1 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively, compared to the previous month. Relative to June 2024, the sector experienced a 5.3 percent decrease in real revenues and a 1.5 percent decrease in nominal revenues.
