Ukraine Envoy Warns Against Russia Concessions

Ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has cautioned against making concessions to Russia.

Speaking to HR Info, Ambassador Makeiev addressed the potential for territorial concessions, stating that peace is not achieved through rewarding aggression. “Whoever rewards Russia today destroys the international legal system. Such compromises open Pandora’s Box for Europe. And ultimately: territory is not abstract-millions of people live there” he said.

Looking ahead to Monday evening’s meeting in Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador clearly articulated expectations. “We yearn for peace” Makeiev stated, “but it is very important that all our partners, including President Trump, understand that Putin is playing for time and we cannot afford to trust Putin.

President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House. Following the bilateral discussion, the meeting is expected to expand to include prominent European political figures. Among those traveling to Washington are Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU in Germany, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
