A delegation including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday.
According to government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, Merz will accompany Zelenskyy and other European heads of state and government for political discussions following Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The visit is intended to facilitate an exchange of information and perspectives.
Chancellor Merz and the assembled leaders are expected to discuss the current status of peace efforts, emphasizing Germany’s desire for a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Key topics of conversation will include security guarantees, territorial issues and the continued support for Ukraine in defending against ongoing Russian aggression. Maintaining pressure through sanctions will also be addressed.
Von der Leyen previously announced her participation following a request from President Zelenskyy to attend discussions at the White House.
