Severe Storms Threaten Southern Germany

Meteorological services in Germany have issued warnings for severe thunderstorms across parts of southern Germany. The alert, valid from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM local time on Friday, encompasses regions within the states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Currently, isolated and at times intense, thunderstorms are developing and are expected to persist through the night, primarily in areas south of the Main and Moselle rivers. Due to the slow-moving nature of these storm cells, localized accumulations of hail – potentially reaching sizes of up to two centimeters – and strong wind gusts are possible.

The German Weather Service (DWD) emphasizes that the primary hazard stems from the potential for heavy rainfall. This could lead to flooding in basements and on roads. Localized damage from lightning strikes is also a possibility.

While the impacts are currently limited to relatively small areas due to the slow movement of the storms, the DWD notes that the warnings may be extended in duration and expanded to cover additional regions. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed and take appropriate precautions.
