Following anticipated discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged Russia to agree to a ceasefire and engage in negotiations with Ukraine.
“Three and a half years after the illegal attack on Ukraine, Russia now has the opportunity to agree to a ceasefire and cease hostilities” Merz stated. “We expect President Putin to take President Trump’s offer of dialogue seriously and, following the meeting in Alaska, to enter into negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions.
Germany, Merz explained, has in recent days, alongside Ukraine and its European allies, worked to outline a path towards peace that safeguards the fundamental security interests of both Europe and Ukraine. “The goal must be a summit that also includes President Zelenskyy, where a ceasefire can be agreed upon” he clarified.
“Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. Territorial questions can only be decided with the consent of the Ukrainians” Merz added, stating that these messages were communicated “clearly and unequivocally” to President Trump prior to his departure for Anchorage. He confirmed he remains in ongoing contact with the U.S. President.
Merz expressed gratitude to President Trump for his initiative and the “close coordination” with European partners. “President Trump can now take a significant step towards peace”. He affirmed that Ukraine can rely on the continued and steadfast support of its European partners.
