Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has accused the Iranian leadership of issuing death threats against her. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Mohammadi stated that officials from the Ministry of Intelligence directly contacted her lawyer, seemingly to demonstrate the seriousness of the threats and to signal a lack of boundaries in their approach.
Mohammadi asserts that following twelve days of conflict between Iran and Israel in June, the Iranian regime has intensified its repression of political opposition. Reports are emerging from across the country of arbitrary arrests based on accusations of espionage, with families and legal counsel often unaware of the detainees’ whereabouts. She describes a resurgence of violence, torture and executions.
Mohammadi suggests the regime is increasingly on the defensive, particularly in the military sphere. She contends that the Islamic Republic is demonstrably weakened in areas such as the development of nuclear weapons, characterizing this as a factual observation.
