European Union leaders have signaled their willingness to contribute to future security commitments for Ukraine. This participation will occur “in accordance with their respective capabilities and competencies, in compliance with international law” and with consideration given to the security and defense interests of all member states, according to a joint statement released Tuesday by all EU nations except Hungary.
A Ukraine capable of effectively defending itself is presented as a key component of any future security arrangement. The EU leaders also acknowledged the efforts of US President Donald Trump towards ending Russia’s military aggression and achieving a “just and lasting peace” founded on principles of international law.
The statement emphasizes the necessity of preserving Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting that international borders should not be altered through force. Furthermore, the leaders affirmed that “the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine”.
