AC Demand Soars 75 Percent Since 2019

Demand for air conditioning units in Germany has risen significantly over the past five years, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Domestic production of these units increased by 75.1 percent, climbing from 181,000 units in 2019 to approximately 317,000 in 2024. The production value mirrored this growth, increasing by 34.4 percent to €1.5 billion – the highest level recorded in the last five years.

Imports also demonstrated substantial gains, with their value rising by 48.2 percent since 2019 to reach €949 million. Italy was the primary country of origin in 2024, accounting for 25.0 percent of imports (€237 million), followed by China with 13.7 percent (€130 million) and Sweden with 10.4 percent (€98 million). Imports peaked in 2023 at €957 million.

Conversely, exports of air conditioning units saw a slight decrease of 2.8 percent, falling to €713 million. It is important to note that the statistics do not include air conditioning units for motor vehicles or component parts.
