Recent research indicates a notable level of engagement with video games across various demographics in Germany. A survey conducted by the German IT industry association, Bitkom, revealed that women, on average, dedicate 2.2 hours daily to gaming – approximately 20 minutes more than men, who average 1.9 hours. The study also found that the proportion of female gamers (52 percent) is equal to that of male gamers (52 percent).

Gaming prevalence extends across age groups, with 87 percent of Germans aged 16 to 29 participating in video games. Surprisingly, a significant 20 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over also engage in gaming, at least occasionally.

On average, gamers spend two hours daily playing, with the vast majority (84 percent) keeping their daily playtime under five hours. A smaller segment, around seven percent, plays for five hours or more each day. A substantial 54 percent of gamers express a desire to excel within their chosen games and 33 percent prefer competitive gameplay against other players.

Casual games lead the popularity charts, being played by 76 percent of gamers at least occasionally. Entertainment-focused titles, including platformers and skill-based games (65 percent) and action games (58 percent) also enjoy considerable traction. Strategy, management and construction games are even more widespread (68 percent), followed closely by social and messenger games (60 percent).

The survey, conducted between May 20th and June 23rd, 2025, involved telephone interviews with 1,209 individuals aged 16 or older in Germany, including 626 self-identified gamers.
