The German government has indicated a pause in arms exports to Israel, specifically those intended for use in the ongoing offensive within the Gaza Strip. The decision, announced Friday, stems from concerns regarding the scope and potential impact of the Israeli cabinet’s recently approved plan for intensified military operations in the region.
Officials cited increasing doubts as to how Israel’s stated war objectives can be achieved given the parameters of the plan, which includes the proposed capture of Gaza City and the temporary displacement of its approximately 800,000 residents.
While reaffirming Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas’s terrorism, the government emphasized the paramount importance of securing the release of hostages and pursuing focused negotiations towards a ceasefire. Disarmament of Hamas and its complete removal from any future role in Gaza, were also highlighted as essential goals.
The government expressed deep concern regarding the continuing suffering of civilians in Gaza, stating that the planned offensive increases Israel’s responsibility for ensuring their provision of essential supplies. A comprehensive and sustained access for humanitarian aid deliveries, including those facilitated by UN organizations and other non-governmental institutions, is demanded. Officials acknowledged recent positive steps, but insisted Gaza’s humanitarian situation requires further, significant and lasting improvements.
Furthermore, the German government urged Israel to refrain from any further actions leading towards annexation of the West Bank.
