SPD Urges Germany To Take Stronger Stance On Israel Arms Sales

Members of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) are urging further action from the German government regarding the conflict involving Israel and Gaza. Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s foreign policy spokesperson, welcomed the recent announcement of a halt to German arms deliveries, but emphasized this represents only an initial step. He suggested potential further measures, including the full or partial suspension of the EU Association Agreement with Israel and the medical evacuation of severely injured children. Ahmetovic also indicated that sanctions targeting Israeli ministers should not be off the table.

Ahmetovic strongly criticized the recent decisions made by the Israeli government to broaden the scope of operations, stating this inevitably contributes to the displacement and deprivation of the Palestinian population. He highlighted that even former hostages, families and a majority within Israel are calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The SPD spokesperson asserted that the original objectives articulated following the October 7th attacks are no longer central to the Israeli government’s approach. He warned that each additional day of conflict results in increased suffering, including more casualties among children and women, as well as escalating risks for the hostages, whose immediate release remains a priority. Ahmetovic affirmed the SPD’s continued support for the Chancellor in implementing further measures.

Norbert Röttgen, a foreign policy expert from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), also expressed approval of the German government’s decision to suspend arms deliveries intended for use in the Gaza conflict. He characterized the decision as a justified response to recent actions by the Israeli security cabinet, stating it had become unavoidable.

Röttgen questioned the clarity of Israel’s current military objectives given the expanded offensive. He further emphasized the catastrophic humanitarian situation within the Gaza Strip, asserting that Israel, as an occupying power, bears responsibility for ensuring the adequate provision of humanitarian aid to the population, a responsibility he believes is currently not being sufficiently met.
