Illegal Border Crossings Rise in Bavaria This Year

German Federal Police have recorded 11,678 instances of unauthorized entry at Bavaria’s land borders since the reintroduction of border controls in September 2024, authorities announced Thursday. The vast majority of these cases – 8,866 – occurred along the border with Austria, followed by 2,458 along the border with the Czech Republic.

Alongside these recorded entries, 6,814 individuals were turned away or deported, including 405 who received re-entry bans for Germany.

Between May 8th and July 31st, 2025, an additional 3,012 unauthorized entries were documented, with 2,151 originating from Austria and 800 from the Czech Republic. During this period, officers arrested 171 suspected human traffickers and executed 655 arrest warrants. Authorities also identified 48 individuals with links to extremist or Islamist ideologies.

The Federal Police have been conducting controls at Germany’s internal Schengen borders since September 2024, with the stated aims of enhancing internal security and curbing irregular migration. The figures are based on police registration statistics up to June 2025, supplemented by special reports for July and are subject to slight revisions pending further investigation.
