Hopes for a swift return of Maja T., currently detained in Hungary, have been tempered by the German government’s human rights commissioner, Lars Castellucci.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Castellucci stated that the most desirable outcome would be Maja T.’s transfer back to Germany. However, he clarified that this would only be possible after a legally binding Hungarian verdict regarding a potential prison sentence, which could then be served in Germany.
Castellucci expressed concern regarding Maja T.’s situation, noting that conditions of detention could be further improved. He raised questions about whether the personal and human rights of a non-binary individual are being appropriately considered within the Hungarian judicial system, both in detention and during court proceedings.
Maja T. is facing trial in Hungary on charges of serious bodily harm. The initial extradition by German authorities approximately a year ago remains a point of contention, particularly as it occurred shortly before a constitutional court ruling declared such extraditions unlawful.
