Poland Extends Border Checks Until October

Poland has announced an extension of its temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania, now slated to remain in place until October 2nd. The decision, revealed by Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski on Sunday, marks a significant shift from the initially planned expiration date of August 25th.

Minister Kierwinski made the announcement following a security meeting with provincial governors and heads of border authorities. He attributed the extension to an increased pressure along Poland’s eastern border. The minister explained that actions by Belarus, specifically the blocking of established migratory routes, have resulted in a redirection of migration flows toward other areas within the European Union.

“The fundamental problem today, not just for us but also for our partners in the European Union, is to close the route that has shifted toward Lithuania and Latvia” Kierwinski stated. The relevant regulation has been officially submitted to the European Commission for notification, adhering to established protocols.
