The German government is facing renewed debate surrounding the potential use of Palantir’s Gotham software by law enforcement agencies. Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger has voiced support for the application of the controversial program, emphasizing the need for Germany to leverage technology to safeguard the nation and its democratic institutions.
Wildberger, speaking to Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, argued that actors with opposing values who pose a threat to countries are increasingly utilizing advanced technologies. He stated that, consequently, Germany should adopt similar tools to protect its own security. He further indicated a desire to invest in such technologies when offered by providers.
However, Wildberger also underscored the importance of fostering European technological independence. He highlighted Germany’s current reliance on American tech giants, noting that 75% of the cloud solutions utilized originate from these US-based companies. While acknowledging successful partnerships with these entities, Wildberger stressed the necessity of cultivating domestic talent and benefiting from burgeoning growth sectors. He believes the German government has a responsibility to become a key customer for German and European companies.
Despite ongoing tensions with the United States, Wildberger reaffirmed his commitment to the transatlantic partnership, describing it as a long-standing and vital alliance. While advocating for greater German agency in various sectors – including defense, energy, industrial production and digitization – he emphasized the importance of maintaining a long-term perspective and avoiding reactive measures based on short-term disagreements. He called for regaining greater control over key areas, pointing to past instances where functions had been outsourced.
