Concerns have been raised regarding the potential nationwide deployment of data analysis software from the US-based company Palantir, as currently under review by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) has voiced caution, acknowledging the need for modern tools for law enforcement agencies while emphasizing the paramount importance of upholding constitutional principles.
Hubig, in comments to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, stressed that while it’s vital for investigative bodies to possess contemporary instruments to address serious crimes and mitigate threats, any technology employed must be demonstrably compatible with the rule of law.
The Justice Minister underscored the need for heightened scrutiny when utilizing software solutions like those offered by Palantir, particularly due to the sensitivity of citizen data involved. She highlighted the necessity of closely examining potential risks, especially given the opacity of algorithms developed by private sector entities. Palantir was founded by technology investor Peter Thiel, who is also known for his political associations.
