A recent survey indicates that heat pumps are rapidly gaining popularity as the preferred heating technology among German homeowners. Conducted by market research firm Appinio on behalf of heating system provider Thermondo, the poll surveyed 700 homeowners and revealed that 34% would choose a heat pump if they were to replace their current heating system today. This represents a significant shift, with only 24% opting for a gas heater, 17% favoring a hybrid system and 9% selecting an oil heater.
Motivations for choosing a heat pump were frequently cited as the potential for reduced heating costs, environmental considerations, a more secure energy supply and the possibility of increased property value. Conversely, homeowners expressed concerns regarding the initial investment cost of heat pumps, suitability for their specific home and perceived economic efficiency. A substantial 55% of respondents indicated that lower electricity prices would be a critical incentive for transitioning to a heat pump.
Industry data from the German Heating Industry Association and the German Heat Pump Association confirms this trend. Sales figures for the first half of 2024 showed that heat pumps surpassed gas heaters in volume for the first time nationwide. However, overall market activity remains subdued. Representatives from the heating sector have noted a degree of uncertainty among households following the government’s announcement regarding the potential repeal of the previous “heating law”. This policy shift has reportedly contributed to a hesitation in investment decisions across the sector.
