The Federal Labor Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Bärbel Bas, has suggested potential tax increases to finance the social security system, though not within the current parliamentary term.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland network, Bas indicated that to avoid rising labor costs, “we need reforms and, ultimately, the financial means to increase state subsidies.
While acknowledging the current coalition government has ruled out tax increases during this legislative period, Bas expressed reservations about the long-term sustainability of this stance. She emphasized the government’s commitment to stimulating economic growth despite ongoing global challenges and fluctuating US trade policies. The need for sustainable funding models for social security remains a key discussion point.
