Granit Xhaka has departed Bayer 04 Leverkusen to join AFC Sunderland in the English Premier League, the Bundesliga club announced on Wednesday.
The Premier League newcomers have agreed to Leverkusen’s transfer conditions, resulting in the early release of the Swiss international. Xhaka, who was previously contracted to Bayer 04 until 2028, has been granted permission to leave the club immediately.
“Granit Xhaka has been a defining player of the Leverkusen team that secured the historic double of Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles in 2024 since his arrival two years ago” stated Bayer 04 Sporting Director Simon Rolfes. “Accommodating his expressed desire to move is, under the negotiated conditions and circumstances, the most beneficial solution for Bayer 04 and all involved parties”.
