Delegates from several European Union member states, including German Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, walked out of the general debate during a global conference of parliament speakers in Geneva. The action occurred during a speech delivered by the President of the Russian Federation Council.
The German Bundestag confirmed the departure on Wednesday, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as the rationale. President Klöckner stated that Russia’s actions constitute a violation of international law through its military actions in Ukraine. She specifically referenced the targeting of civilian infrastructure, which she characterized as an act of terror against the Ukrainian population.
The walkout was reportedly a direct response to what was described as cynical attempts by the Russian delegation to distort historical narratives and reverse victim and perpetrator roles. The delegates emphasized the principle that the law of the stronger should not prevail and reiterated their continued support for Ukraine.
