Pensioner Pay Varies Widely Across Germany

Recent analysis from the German Pension Insurance Federation (Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund), reported by “Bild am Sonntag”, reveals an increase in pension payments for existing retirees in Germany throughout 2024. Male retirees are now receiving an average monthly payment of €1,486, while female retirees are receiving €985. These figures represent a rise of €59 and €49 respectively compared to the previous year.

Significant regional variations exist in pension levels. Baden-Württemberg presently offers the highest average pension for men, after accounting for healthcare and long-term care insurance contributions, at €1,553. The Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia closely follow with €1,552 and €1,535 respectively. Female retirees receive the highest average pensions in East Berlin (€1,374), Brandenburg (€1,285) and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (€1,270). Conversely, men receive the lowest average pensions in West Berlin (€1,263). The lowest pension payments for women are observed in the Saarland (€797) and Rhineland-Palatinate (€863).

Notably, individuals retiring in 2024 are generally receiving lower average pension payments compared to established retirees. The average new pension for men stands at €1,374, which is €112 less than the average received by older pension holders. For female retirees, the average new pension is €1,000, slightly exceeding the average for those already receiving payments.
