A potential shift in ownership for German media giant ProSiebenSat.1 is prompting concerns regarding journalistic independence. Culture State Minister Wolfram Weimer has expressed apprehension that the company’s autonomy could be compromised if it falls under the complete control of the Italian holding company MFE, significantly influenced by Pier Silvio Berlusconi.
MFE currently holds approximately 30% of ProSiebenSat.1 and is now engaged in a competitive bidding process with the Czech PPF Group to acquire full control. This contest, involving parallel offers to shareholders, is scheduled to conclude on August 13th.
Minister Weimer has invited Berlusconi to a meeting at the Chancellery in September. The purpose of the encounter is to ensure transparency and foster a comprehensive assessment of potential consequences. Key issues to be addressed include the extent of potential political influence from new foreign ownership, the safeguarding of journalistic quality and independence and the implications for the broader German television landscape.
The concerns are heightened by the historical connections of Berlusconi’s father, former Italian Prime Minister and media entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi, to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Minister Weimer stated the need for rigorous scrutiny of any foreign investor gaining control of a significant institution of public opinion in Germany, emphasizing the importance of understanding the individuals and connections influencing these developments. He anticipates the conversation with Berlusconi will focus on these critical aspects.
