Berlin Mayor Backs Pride Flags Defies Hate

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) participated in the Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations and raised the rainbow flag as a visible demonstration against the rising tide of violence targeting LGBTQ+ individuals.

Speaking at the commencement of Berlin’s CSD, Wegner emphasized the necessity of a strong stance against escalating hate crimes. “We are living in times where we are unfortunately experiencing a resurgence of hate crimes” he stated, referencing attacks – verbal and physical – against gay, lesbian and transgender people. “This is something we cannot tolerate. It’s important to send a clear commitment and a clear signal, both from politics and far beyond from society.

Wegner underscored his commitment to ensuring Berlin remains a diverse and inclusive city. “We want Berlin to be colorful. We want to bring the rainbow-queer community to the center of society. We want to show them that they are not alone and that hate, violence and exclusion have no place in this city and beyond”. He declined to comment on the contrast between the display of rainbow flags in Berlin’s government buildings and their absence at the Bundestag. “I am responsible for Berlin” he affirmed. He added that the rainbow flag embodies tolerance and diversity, representing core values of the city.

The Governing Mayor signaled a firm response from the police should antisemitic outbursts or violence against law enforcement occur during the afternoon’s “Internationalist Queer Pride” (IQP) event. “Where antisemitism exists, where violence against police forces is applied, the police will intervene robustly and consistently with the full support of the Governing Mayor”. Wegner concluded by asserting that tolerance has its limits, drawing a line at its violation or attack.
