North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister President, Hendrik Wüst of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has called for renewed and pragmatic discussions within the black-and-red coalition regarding the recent failed judicial election, with a view to restarting the process after the summer recess.
Acknowledging the unsuccessful outcome of the election, Wüst stated to “Focus” magazine that while the situation did not constitute a constitutional crisis, he hopes the CDU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) can engage in measured and constructive dialogue during the parliamentary break, paving the way for a fresh attempt in September.
Wüst emphasized the importance of drawing lessons from the postponement. “Experience from past coalition partnerships, whether with the Free Democratic Party or the Green Party, demonstrates that communication is always crucial, particularly when facing challenges” he explained.
The Minister President defended the SPD’s candidate, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, describing her as a “highly qualified legal expert and a strong personality”. He further criticized the nature of some attacks directed towards her, noting that they were “simply unacceptable.
While understanding the reservations expressed within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group concerning Brosius-Gersdorf’s candidacy, Wüst recognized the sensitivity surrounding issues such as the protection of unborn life and human dignity. He argued that portraying advocacy for such values as right-wing or extremist is problematic and that reasoned critique must be permissible, especially for those seeking high office. “The members of the Bundestag are entitled to make their decisions freely. And that is correct”.
