Austria Backs Gaza Statement Defends Israel

Austria has reaffirmed its commitment to a statement signed by 28 nations calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza. The declaration, reflecting a shared desire for resolution, has sparked debate internationally.

Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, in comments to “Welt am Sonntag” emphasized Austria’s solidarity with Israel, acknowledging the nation’s struggle against “existential threats”. While reaffirming this support, Meinl-Reisinger also stressed the urgent need for improved humanitarian conditions within Gaza, asserting the unwavering adherence to international humanitarian law.

The chairperson of the liberal Neos party echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Austria’s friendship with Israel while asserting the necessity of conveying concerns directly to the government in Jerusalem and addressing the untenable humanitarian situation.

The call for peace also included emphasis on the critical importance of securing the release of remaining Israeli hostages and dismantling Hamas. Meinl-Reisinger suggested a window of opportunity for peace currently exists and urged Israel to capitalize on this possibility.

Notably, both Germany and the United States opted not to endorse the declaration, triggering internal political contention within the German government. Elements of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have voiced criticism regarding the lack of support for the statement.
