A swift and decisive process is being urged for the reform of Germany’s debt brake, as outlined in the governing coalition’s agreement. Thorsten Rudolph, parliamentary spokesperson for budgetary policy for the SPD parliamentary group, emphasized the urgency in comments to the “Rheinische Post.
Rudolph stated his expectation that the government commission, established to modernize the debt brake, will rapidly develop proposals within the coming months. These proposals should, according to Rudolph, facilitate sustained additional investment in strengthening the nation. He further underscored the necessity for the governing parties and parliamentary factions to actively seek and secure the necessary support from across the democratic factions within the Bundestag based on the commission’s recommendations.
Rudolph’s remarks also subtly referenced recent challenges within the coalition, alluding to the failed judicial election and the ensuing debate surrounding Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, which triggered resistance among members of the CDU/CSU (Unions) parliamentary group. He expressed confidence that the reform process could succeed without further internal divisions within that group.
Christian Haase, parliamentary spokesperson for budgetary policy for the CDU/CSU, acknowledged the importance of the commission but urged a measured approach. He confirmed the body will be comprised of high-profile individuals possessing significant budgetary expertise from academia, politics and practical experience. This composition, Haase argued, ensures a broad and informed discussion regarding potential reform options. However, he stressed that any reforms must preserve the debt brake’s role as a mechanism for stability and must adhere to European guidelines.
