Construction Fuels German Economic Stability

The German construction industry is being highlighted as a key factor in maintaining economic stability, according to Federal Minister for Construction Verena Hubertz. In an interview with “Handelsblatt”, Minister Hubertz emphasized the sector’s relative resilience compared to other industries, noting its lessened dependence on the US economy. She suggested that investments in materials like concrete, wood and housing can serve as a driver of economic strength even amidst fluctuating US policy.

Hubertz expressed concern over ongoing trade threats from President Trump, asserting that such actions create “only losers” and jeopardize not just the German and EU economies, but primarily the US economy itself. She remains hopeful for an agreement between the EU Commission and the US government.

The establishment of a special fund has been acknowledged as a positive step, providing a framework for long-term financing and enabling necessary investments. Minister Hubertz stressed the urgency of swiftly deploying these funds to construction projects.

However, the mood within the construction sector is more cautious. Felix Pakleppa, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Association of German Construction Industry (ZDB), while recognizing the industry’s independence from US trade policies and its potential to stabilize the German economy, underscored the need for clear political signals and reliability. He pointed to the current suspension of tenders by the Autobahn GmbH (federal highway authority) as a counterproductive indicator of uncertainty for investment in Germany. Pakleppa emphasized the need for the federal government to quickly provide clarity, lift the tender suspension and secure binding financing to fully realize the potential of the special fund.
